Hazelwood East Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Unnamed (22)

Voyager Renewables is developing a 500MW / 4-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on Tramway Road, Hazelwood North. Our project sits within the Gippsland Renewable Energy Zone.

The system will store electricity when demand is low and deliver it back to the grid when demand is high, powering hundreds of thousands of homes for four hours.

Project benefits

  • Reliable energy supply during peak demand.
  • Integration of renewables by storing excess solar and wind power.
  • Local opportunities through jobs and supplier engagement during construction.
  • Regional legacy: continues Hazelwood North’s role in powering Victoria.

Next steps

The Hazelwood East BESS is seeking planning approvals via the Development Facilitation Program, administered by the Victorian Government’s Department of Transport and Planning.

As part of our application, we are undertaking detailed technical and environmental assessments, engaging with regulators and stakeholders, and continuing conversations with the local community to help inform the project’s development.

We invite community members to learn more about the project at our upcoming Community Information Session, where the project team will be available to discuss the proposed development, planning process and assessment findings to date.

Community Information Session

  • Tuesday, 16 June 2026
  • 2:00pm – 6:00pm
  • Hazelwood North Community Hall, Church Road, Hazelwood North

The session will provide an opportunity to ask questions, share feedback and learn more about the project’s potential benefits, including local investment opportunities and community benefit initiatives. Feedback received will help inform our ongoing engagement as the project progresses through the planning approvals process.
