Voyager Renewables is pleased to announce plans for a new battery energy storage system (BESS) in Hazelwood North, Gippsland. The project is in its early stages with a final investment decision expected in late 2027 and construction earmarked for 2028.

The BESS will be designed to deliver up to 500MW of capacity, with 2,000MWh of storage. Once operational, the project will provide significant benefits to the Victorian energy system including improved grid reliability, enhanced integration of renewable energy and support for Victoria’s transition to a cleaner energy future.

We recognise energy projects are most successful when they are developed in partnership with the communities that host them. Voyager Renewables has been meeting with local community members to understand local context and priorities.

We are committed to ensuring that our Hazelwood East BESS project goes beyond best practice and delivers real impact by strengthening community cohesion. Our focus on impactful investment underpins our Sustainable Communities Strategy that strengthens community cohesion and evaluates our local and regional impact. We seek to build trust from the ground up, for the long term.

Over the full life cycle of the project, we will maintain a strong focus on local employment and training opportunities, supporting regional supply chains, investing in community programs, partnering with Traditional Owners, and maintaining transparent engagement to ensure the project delivers lasting social and environmental benefits.

Voyager Renewables acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands on which this project will be developed, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We celebrate the stories, cultures and traditions of all First Nations Peoples and look forward to working in partnership the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation to deliver the project.

This project represents an important step in delivering innovative renewable energy solutions that strengthen Australia’s energy future while supporting the communities in which we work and live.
